The latest version of the FIDES guide (2022) is the benchmark for calculating the reliability of electronic components. It provides a pragmatic solution for companies that do not have enough experience and whose manufacturing costs is not compatible with extensive testing. Until 2025, there was no industrialized software handling all the calculations of the guide. This has now been achieved with FIDES Lab, the result of an IMdR project involving 14 companies between 2023 and 2025.
This software, co-financed and developed by SATODEV, enables component reliability studies to be carried out easily. Fides Lab guarantees intuitive and efficient working thanks to an interface that features both user-guided forms and tables that allow quick data entry via copy/paste from a spreadsheet.
Used by major companies (in aeronautics, space, defense, rail, etc.), this product has quickly proven its worth in the industry.
FIDES
The FIDES guide defines a methodology based on both component physics and feedback. This methodology takes into account the technologies of the components used and the environment in which they are expected to operate (mission profile, electrical constraints, overload, etc.). It requires rigorous work in entering parameters.
The companies that participated in the FIDES Lab project have extensive experience in reliability calculations. This experience has shown that “manual” reliability calculations using your favorite spreadsheet program do not guarantee the accuracy of the calculations, error-free data entry, or even less so, a check to ensure the consistency of the data entered.
This is where FIDES Lab comes in, which:
- Performs calculations validated by 14 companies
- Guides the input of multiple-choice values
- Validates “free text” parameter values as soon as they are typed
- Guarantees the consistency of the data entered
- Allows you to go beyond the component families provided for in the guide
- Warns you of any deviations from the FIDES guide
Open FIDES for interoperability
We use the OpenFIDES format for FIDES Lab to offer you a flexible, interoperable, and scalable solution. This standardized format, designed to facilitate data exchange between reliability tools, helps your company to save time and reduce errors related to manual transfers and software incompatibilities.
With FIDES Lab, you benefit from full compatibility with other software on the market or your internal tools using OpenFIDES. Whether you are working on complex systems or a single board with 100 components, our solution provides import, export, and sharing of your data with ease, without any loss of information.
It is currently the only standardized solution for digital continuity when you manage component reliability studies.
In addition, our software is designed to adapt to future developments in the OpenFIDES format, thus ensuring the durability of your studies.
Computations and results
Today, the companies involved in the project have validated FIDES Lab’s compliance with the FIDES 2022 guide. Each chapter is 100% covered : electronic components, hybrid and multi-chip modules, microwave and radio frequency components, COTS boards, and various sub-assemblies.
It is possible to change life profiles locally if a set of components is not in the same environment as the others.
A hierarchy concept is available both for creating the BOM and for defining parameters that will be applied to an entire sub-tree. This limits the number of values to be entered and facilitates modifications.
FIDES Lab offers simple management of life profiles and their different phases, allowing calculations to be quickly restarted with different profiles.
The results are directly visible in the interface, but a report can also be generated in Excel format.
Available as a desktop application, FIDES Lab allows calculations to be automated by launching it from the command line with the appropriate arguments.
In conclusion, this tool revolutionizes the FIDES studies and paves the way to future integrations with other methods. First and foremost, we are thinking of the link with FMEA, and then feeding into fault tree software. These developments will be available in the professional version, FIDES Lab Pro.
